WLS Overview

Stackpole Engineering Services (SES) provides WLS services for digitizing surfaces of nearly any size component or assembly.  From competitor product analysis to the development of solid models for complicated objects, SES can provide solutions using its WLS cameras, software and post-processing tools.  Precision ranges from 1 point every 0.008mm to 1.1mm with ±0.0005mm accuracy.

WLS Measuring On-Site

To ensure the quality of our work, SES prefers to conduct WLS projects at our R&D center in Charlotte, NC.  All objects to be measured should be clean, disassembled and ready to measure upon arrival.  SES will perform parts cleaning, disassembly and reassembly for an additional fee.

WLS Measuring Off-Site

For extremely large objects or circumstances that preclude transporting scan items to our R&D center, SES can provide WLS services at the client’s location.  Discussions relating to the detailed requirements for the scanning environment will need to take place prior to scheduling off-site WLS sessions.  Shipping, insurance, and travel are billed in addition to measurement costs.

WLS Deliverables

Proper reporting of WLS results is an important part of the SES measurement process.

SES provides 3D geometric point clouds in either CAD or text file format for quality control and part inspection purposes.  SES can also supply quality control databases and reporting formats to suit individual clients’ needs.  For these applications, it is often not necessary to perform additional surfacing work.

SES can also post-process the WLS point cloud into CAD surfaces or solid models, which can be used to support FEA, CFD and dynamics modeling analysis.  Models can be provided in all popular file formats including *.sldprt, *.iges, *.stl, *.prt, *.3dm.

WLS Options

SES can combine WLS with coordinate measurement machine (CMM) data to provide surface, structure and point location details in the same CAD file.  This provides complete data to support FEA, CFD, or reverse engineering activities.
